UCLA Research Ramp-Up

Effective June 1, 2021, a Research Operational Plan (ROP) is no longer required for research and creative activities, both on-campus and in the field.

At this time, research activities may only resume with the approval of your department chair, chief or director and the approval of your school’s dean or dean’s designee. You must strictly adhere to the provisions detailed in your approved operational plan.

If you need to modify your plan to include additional personnel and/or locations, you must submit a new research operational plan, and that plan must be reapproved, before that work begins. This will enable us to communicate efficiently with individual investigators, for example about facilities issues, should circumstances require it.

Building Management:

-Item #6 is modified as follows: Coordination with Facilities Management including Custodial Services, building security, campus mail services, and the UC Police Department, among other services under the Vice Chancellor for Administration and the Chief Financial Officer is critical to ensuring safer use of space as buildings are re-populated and densities increase. (updated as of June 17, 2020)

-Item # 7 added. Signage for common areas and department use is being developed and coordinated through the Physical Distancing Working Group, under the Future Planning Taskforce. This signage is going through legal and strategic communications review. Departments should not produce their own COVID-19 related signage and should use signage provided. Questions on signage can be directed to the Working Group chair, Nurit Katz nkatz@facnet.ucla.edu. (updated as of June 17, 2020)

-Item #8 added. Disinfection supplies for department use are being procured centrally via Facilities Management. Details on how to order can be found at: https://www.facilities.ucla.edu/covid19 (updated as of June 17, 2020)

-Laboratory Research

-Clinical Trials and Human Subjects Research

-Libraries, Archives, and Reading Rooms

-Performance- and Studio-based Research

-Field and Community-Based Research
-Item #5 deleted. Updated IRB approval is not required. (updated as of June 17, 2020)
-Item #2c is modified as follows: “Positive consent should be obtained in writing, either on paper or via email, from research participants and partners.” as required by the IRB. (updated as June 17, 2020)

-Core Facilities

Effective June 1, 2021, a Research Operational Plan (ROP) is no longer required for research and creative activities, both on-campus and in the field; ROPs are also not required for research-related travel.

PIs are able to populate their activities with researchers as they deem necessary, so long as they continue to comply with all mandates from the CDC, California Department of Public Health, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH), and Cal/OSHA, including, but not limited to, those concerning personnel density, masking, and distancing.
